I normally don’t get on tangents because a lot of the time I think they are just a waste of time…mostly for the audience who is bearing the arrogant rant. But today is different. I’m going to be a bit arrogant and sound off.
You know how the first snow fall of the year inflicts havoc on the roads because everyone forgot how to drive in snow? I think the same can be said in the spring time. When I’m out on the road riding, I’m not so much worried about my ability to obey the laws and share the road as I am with the driver who is on my a#$ or is cutting in front of me. I am scared to death getting out on the road this time of year because it is like the drivers completely forgot how to share the road with bikers. It’s as if they forget what a biker looks like. Or better yet, dumb drivers become even dumber drivers when they see us.
It is as if all common sense goes out the window (pun intended for extra ranting effect). Yesterday’s ride is a perfect example. I received two honks from two different drivers and one calm finger. In fact, one of the drivers decided to lay on the horn as they drove up on me. They honked and gave me this look as if I didn’t belong there.
Now don’t get me wrong here. I’m not the perfect biker and I sometimes make my share of mistakes. But the honks and finger came when I was in perfect compliance of the law. And it probably doesn’t help matters when I turn delightfully, with the largest grin I can possibly put on my face, and return the accolades. I guess you could count me as part of the problem. But I have seen drivers slam on their brakes, swerve, and nearly total their vehicle just so they could miss the little squirrel that ran out in front of them. It would just be nice if us bikers could be viewed with a little more concern and importance than a damn squirrel.
So for the safety of all bicyclists, drivers, pedestrians, motor cyclists, and roller bladders…chill out. Life isn’t about you nor is it about me. Share the road. This way we can avoid having me waste your time with diatribes of nonsense. It’s spring…I’m going to be out on the road in spandex so you might as well relax and enjoy the view…
