Legs & Wheels

If you want to read up on how the WORS #1 Iola Bump & Jump went for me you can go HERE or HERE   I’m excited for the season.  Things are getting dialed in and I’m feeling good about where I am at.

But the real story over the weekend was Nikole running the Eau Claire Half Marathon.  Of all the years that we have been together, this year, by far, is the year that she has put in the most time, effort, and attention into her training.  And Sunday was her day despite the 35 degree weather and the wind gusts.

I didn’t get to see her at the start but I did skip out of church during the sermon to catch her coming through at the seven mile marker.  She looked strong and was running a bit faster pace than she had planned.  Her worst two miles came at eight and nine.  She told me she was ready to quite.  But, Nikole being the competitive person that she is kept on and made it to the finish line in 1:42:58.* That is her personal half marathon best.  I’m proud of her because there is nothing harder than running and she can sure make a tough sport look fun.

So between Nikole and I we covered 33.1 miles with legs and wheels on Sunday.  Oh yea…Ayden didn’t get a chance to run but he did follow mom around the course with the help of Grandma.

Next up for me is the Cable Off Road Classic and the Green Bay Half Marathon for Nikole and the Green Bay Kids run for Ayden.  Good times…

Cable Off-Road Classic

Jay Richards @Skinnyski

First MTB race of the season is in the books and well, I felt good but I’m pretty sure I could have done better.  It was one of those races were one or two events during the race really affected your result – good or bad…like say, took a wrong turn or missed a turn (which I heard some of the leaders did).  Either way it was a good first ride and I’m pleased with where I’m at this early in the season.

In a nut shell – I think I could have done better if one of the two, or both of these things, didn’t happen -

1)  Having a really bad start.  I didn’t get in the start area until ten minutes before the start (my fault and no one to blame).  So I started 125 riders or so back from the front.  Not a good place to start in a race that requires riding your butt off for the first two miles so that you can get into the single track ahead of the major log jam.  Well, I ended up in the middle of the log jam and found myself behind riders who were a lot slower.  This, in the end, required a lot of patience as I had to pass many riders during the race.  A bit frustrating.

2)  Shifting on a really bumpy logging road.  So we came out from the first single track section onto a pretty rough logging road.  It was time to put on the gas a bit and pass as many slower riders as I could before we hit the second single track section.  I was on a guys wheel when I decided to shift up in my front ring only to have the chain kick off the chain ring and get wrapped around the crank arm.  I eventually had to get off and manually untangle the chain and get it back on.  It was only about 45 seconds or so but enough to lose the wheel of the faster riders that I was with and to find myself behind all the slower riders I just passed.

A lot a work to do - Jay Richards @Skinnyski

It doesn’t sound all that bad but in a 26 mile race, you don’t want to always be having to pass slower riders.  But like I said – those two things were my fault and lets just say I’m ready for the next one.  I will chalk this one up as a great and fun first race of the season.  Now my body and my mind remembers what it is like to race thru the woods.  Hey, its been a couple months ya know…
